Democratic forces formulate a common position on the referendum as Civil Society develops online services

Against the backdrop of Western capitals strong reaction to the migration crisis on the Belarusian-EU border, democratic forces endeavour to ensure that international institutions do not lose sight of their core agenda of an end to violence, the holding of new elections and the resignation of Lukashenka. Democratic forces are beginning referendum preparations by announcing a unified platform for supporters of change to participate in the referendum.

Regime opponents are developing a consolidated position on the issue of the constitutional referendum. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya proposes a plan to participate in the referendum, with the intention of re-purposing the event as a protest action and a vote of no confidence in Lukashenka. The Democrats are beginning to promote a common position and try to mobilise supporters of change to come to the polling stations.

Civil society organisations continue to adapt to repression and COVID-19 with a continually increasing range of online advisory services.

Political organisations are pursuing online educational initiatives to consolidate their supporters and teach civic activism. “Our Party” organises online debates. The office of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya offers a series of courses on media literacy and activism to offset the regime’s attempts to demotivate the journalistic community with repression and criminal prosecution. Youth organisations are trying to support the activity of youth leaders. In cooperation with human rights activists, the Green Party tries to mitigate the authorities’ actions by collecting humanitarian aid for migrants.

Thus, democratic forces strengthen coordination regarding participation in the referendum on constitutional change.
