Belarusian opposition adds another dimension to Chernobyl Path rally

Minsk city executive committee has granted a permission to the opposition to hold a rally to commemorate the 30thanniversary of the Chernobyl accident. As usual, the authorities have made adjustments to the plans of the opposition and changed the place of the venue and its duration. It is worth noting, that Belarusians are divided over developing nuclear energy in the country. Since Nobel Literature Prize winner Sviatlana Alexievich has joined the Chernobyl Path organising committee, the event has gained in popularity among independent media outlets, which is likely to lead to a greater number in the rally participants. In addition, opposition parties have added an extra dimension to the rally by including claims to withdraw Russian military aircrafts from Belarus and abandon the idea of deploying a Russian military airbase. Meanwhile, opposition’s appeals to curtail the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant in Ostrovets are unlikely to spark public outcry.
