Ex-candidate to president Ales Michalevic returns to Belarus, gets arrested at the border
Ex-candidate to president at presidential election-2010 Ales Michalevic, who was granted asylum in Czech Republic, returned to Belarus.
Immediately at the border he was arrested as a “person who is in the wanted list” by the border guards.
In his Facebook post written before travelling to Belarus Michalevic wrote that he knew he would be arrested since he remained the last accused person in the 2010 case of “mass riots” which the Investigation Committee of Belarus refuses to close.
“Mass riots” case refers to mass peaceful protest of 2010 which was brutally dispersed by riot police immediately after presidential election of 2010. As a result, most of the candidates for president were arrested, and later sentenced to prison terms.
Michalevic himself was released from the KGB’s detention facility on February 19th, 2010. He later gave a press conference on tortures in KGB’s detention facility and left Belarus secretly.
