Lukashenka moves from cheap populism to forced indifference
Lacking resources the Belarusian authorities move away from their populist policies towards the policy of “forced indifference”.
The holding of All-Belarusian People’s Assembly – a traditional event before every presidential election – looks unlikely now because of the bad shape of the Belarusian economy. Now, Lukashenka prefers political apathy to political support.
Statements at the previous All-Belarusian People’s Assembly in 2010 made by Lukashenka – on the breakthrough in the development of the country, on the efficiency of the socio-political course – started to look laughable in March 2010 when Belarusian ruble devaluated making Belarusians much poorer.
Lukashenka has nothing to offer to the electorate – and he prefers not to offer anything. In this situation his traditional electorate should switch to eating “self-grown products”.
