Regions: flooding monitoring, rescuers work

The Emergency Ministry is prepared for spring floods. In some regions water levels are higher than the long-time average, but water logs are local and under control.

Many regions have successfully overcome the flooding peak. The flood situation is quiet in the Grodno and Minsk regions. Traditionally, the situation in Polessie is more complicated. However, in the Southern regions the ice on rivers has completely melted, peaking on April 21^st– 22. Vitebsk and Mogilev regions face high flooding risks. In Mogilev region, the flooding peaks for the Dnieper and Sozh Rivers are yet to come. Most of the water is now on its way to Zhlobin and Gomel. In Gomel, significant flooding of the Sozh River is anticipated which could result in flooding of the residential area in the River’s immediate vicinity.

Ministry of Emergencies is said to be prepared for the flooding. Rescue efforts will also be assisted by rapid reaction units of the Belarusian Red Cross Society. The flooded regions are supplied with food and hygiene kits with disinfectants, liquid soap, napkins. OSVOD Rescuers also take part in helping to overcome the consequences of the flooding. In most cases, people refuse to evacuate, underscoring the non-critical nature of the flood.

According to the latest Emergency Situations Ministry reports, due to rising water levels in the rivers Pripyat, Pina, Western Dvina, the Dnieper, Neman, Vilia, Sozh, etc in Brest, Vitebsk, Gomel, Grodno, Minsk and Mogilev regions remain flooded: with floodwaters – 449 residential houses, 2,825 homesteads, 2496 agricultural facilities, 1092 suburban homes, school building, shops, garages, medical and obstetric center and 5 recuperation facilities, 68 road sections, 1 foot and 13 highway bridges.

Settlements continue functioning and the flood situation is monitored continuously.
